a thought (or two) on venice...

there is something enchanting about venice.
no not something. everything.
intricate and delicate, the city sparkles in all light, reflecting off of the water and a pastel rainbow of buildings.
water laps at the boats, licking them as a cat, grateful for its owner's attention.
the townspeople meander about the city, bathin in the simplicity of their island haven lives.
elderly ladies greet one another by name in passing, while elderly men wave at shop owners and smile at pretty italian ladies.
the streets have no shape or order, as though the buildings were built, purchased and inhabited solely that they might hug one another.
one does not mistakingly lose oneself in venice, but mistakingly recognises where she is. it is as though everyone is lost, and blissfully so.
there is a carnevale held in venice each february, where the townspeople celebrate everything in an anti-clockwise fashion, reverting to games, dress ups and trickery. i am reminded of the feast of the Lost Boys and wonder if any of these Venetians remember the real world, the main land, where lives are lived in clock-wise fashion, without time for play or names or romance. i envy those who have no recollection.

may the venetians sink with their island, that the step to heaven be obselete.
